HOW DO I SELECT A BAR STOOL?

In addition to height and width requirements, select a bar stool style that either blends with your decorating style OR that creates the decorator look you want the room to have. Bar stools are pieces of statement furniture that place the decorative exclamation point on your unique style. Bar stool styles can include traditional, modern/contemporary or retro. Traditional bar stools, made of wood or metal or a combination, present time-honored style that blends with many decorative styles. Modern bar stools are fun, playful pieces that blend with contemporary furnishings or stand out in a room if your look is more classic.  These bar stools can be made of wood, metal, fiberglass, plastics or a combination of  materials. Retro bar stools are reminescent of a 50s era diner and add to the theme if your style includes antiques or collectibles. Vintage bar stools often are constructed of chrome bases with vinyl seats, but they can be built of various other materials, as well. Other considerations in bar stool selection are preference of barstools with backs or backless, swivel or stationary bar stools and type of bar stool materials/construction you find most attractive and comfortable ie. wood, metal, fiberglass, etc.

HOW DO I PICK THE CORRECT HEIGHT BAR STOOL?

As a general rule, allow 10" to 13" between the bar stool seat and the bottom of the bar table or counter for ample leg room. For more information, read our article on Bar Stool Height Selection. Remember to consider height of armrests if you choose bar stools with that feature. Determine whether or not the bar stools can fit under the bar table or counter and if space/aesthetics are an issue if the bar stools will not fit under the table or counter.

HOW MANY BAR STOOLS WILL FIT AT MY COUNTER?

The number of bar stools to place at a bar table or counter depends on the size of bar stool you have selected. For stools 16" to 18" wide, allow for at least 22" of space. For stools 19" to 22" wide, allow at least 25" of space. Perhaps the easiest method for determining how many bar stools of average dimensions will fit at a counter is to measure the length of the bar counter. Divide this number by two to determine the number of bar stools that will fit at the counter. Take note that swivel stools or bar stools with armrests require varying but larger spaces. Remember to consider height of armrests if you choose bar stools with that feature. Determine whether or not the barstools with armrests can fit under the bar table or counter. Then decide if space/aesthetics are an issue if the bar stools will not fit under the table or counter.
